Rookie forward Juliette Bader announced her arrival in spectacular fashion, scoring twice to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 3-2 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks Friday night.
Bader's brilliance in her first Atlantic University Sport (AUS) game was the catalyst that propelled the Panthers (1-0) to a hard-fought victory, showcasing the young striker's potential as a breakout star. Abby Locke-Tremblay also contributed a crucial goal in the win.
"I couldn't have done it without the entire team," Bader said. "Those goals were a collective effort, and it made our first game that much more exciting."
The Sea-Hawks (0-1) wasted no time asserting themselves in the match, with veteran forward Zoe Rowe capitalizing on a well-executed play to give her team an early advantage. In just the 3rd minute, Claire Langille showcased her speed as she burst past the defence and delivered a perfectly placed cross to Rowe, who found herself unmarked in front of the goal and slotted the ball home.
However, UPEI's Wendy Dadzie orchestrated the equalizer with a well-timed touch pass to Bader, who calmly skipped the ball past goalkeeper Leana Claude into the far post.
"I love playing with her," Bader said, reflecting on the instant connection she felt with Dadzie. "Coming in as a rookie, there's a lot to learn about playing with new teammates, but with Wendy, everything just clicked from the start."
Memorial reclaimed the lead in the 36th minute, with Langille and Rowe once again connecting on a goal. Langille made a determined run, cutting sharply toward the penalty area before delivering a precise pass across the six-yard box. Rowe, perfectly positioned once again, calmly redirected the ball into the net, putting the Sea-Hawks back in front.
In previous years, falling behind usually led to the team losing control of the match, but today was a different story.
"I give a lot of credit to coaches Lauren Clark and Nicole McInnis and all the hard work they put in off the field," Panthers head coach Lewis Page explained. "We focused a lot on team culture and leadership and the players lived it today."
In the dying moments of the first half, UPEI mounted a relentless attack. The ball bounced around the box, creating chaos in front of Memorial's goal. Dadzie's initial attempt rattled off the crossbar, but Locke-Tremblay was in the right place at the right time, tapping the ball in to tie the game at two apiece.
The second half saw the game slow down as both teams settled into a more controlled rhythm. Despite the calmer pace, it was UPEI who found the decisive breakthrough in the 51st minute, courtesy of Bader once again. Lydia Hamill's tenacity at the edge of the penalty area allowed her to retain possession under pressure before delivering a perfect pass to Bader. The rookie turned sharply and snuck a shot past the keeper, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Despite Memorial's efforts to find an equalizer, UPEI's defence held firm, securing a vital victory in their home opener. The Panthers look to make it two in a row when they take on the visiting Cape Breton Capers Sunday at 11 a.m., while the Sea-Hawks travel to Halifax to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies.
