Fueled by a monster 16-point performance from Lauren Misener, the UPEI Panthers went toe-to-toe with the perennial powerhouse St. FX X-Women on Saturday, walking away with a 26-26 draw that felt more like a statement than a stalemate.
Head coach Curtis Lauzon said her performance was emblematic of the passion and energy driving this young group.
"She's been a rockstar all season," Lauzon said. "When we learned Misener was coming back, we expected her to make an impact as a senior, but she's blown past every expectation. She's playing with incredible passion, and you can see how much she's enjoying every moment out there."
The Panthers wasted no time stunning one of the league's most decorated programs. Their relentless attack kept St. FX pinned deep, and in the 15th minute the pressure finally cracked the defence. Misener picked up the ball just shy of the line and dove over it for the opening try, before calmly added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, UPEI's defensive pressure created another opportunity. Isabella MacKinnon stole the ball inside their 22, flipping the field and putting the Panthers back on the front foot. After several bruising carries, Emily-Anne MacQuarrie powered her way over the line to double the lead, 14-0.
That ferocity was exactly what Lauzon wanted to see.
"We essentially implemented our game plan to a T in all areas of the field," he said. "Credit to our coaching staff for identifying those small but impactful adjustments during the week, and to the players for executing them with such precision."
The X-Women, true to their pedigree as perennial contenders, answered in the 34th minute as Jessie Penney punched through and Katie Murphy converted to cut the lead in half. But the Panthers' reply was spectacular. Just four minutes later, Rowan Gallagher fielded a clearing kick over her shoulder and exploded down the sideline. Weaving through four tacklers, she blazed over 70 yards to restore momentum and push the advantage to 21-7.
Before the halftime whistle, UPEI struck again. After another long attacking sequence, Misener faked a pass that froze the defence and dove in for her second try of the afternoon. With her conversion, the Panthers carried a commanding 26-7 lead into the break.
Lauzon admitted it's not easy to maintain that kind of pace against a championship-calibre program.
"Naturally, with a lead it can be easy to take the foot off the pedal, and I think we did that a bit," he said. "I have no doubt this group will take the lesson to heart and learn how to close out games as we head into some of the most meaningful moments of the season."
The X-Women wasted no time making their move. Just three minutes into the second half, Courtney Gottselig broke the line for a try, converted by Murphy. Momentum stayed blue and white, and in the 58th minute, Akwaima Akpan crossed to trim the gap to five. Penney's second try of the game in the 67th minute, though unconverted, completed the comeback at 26-26.
The closing minutes were all St. FX, but the Panthers dug deep defensively. Wave after wave was turned aside until the final whistle blew on a thrilling stalemate.
For Lauzon, the performance symbolized how far his program has come in a short time.
"Really proud of the performance across the entire squad," he said. "What people don't always see is the group of 45 players driving our training environment and setting the standard. That work is what allows the team on the field to execute on game day. The growth has already been phenomenal, and I have no doubt we'll keep building on that trajectory."
The Panthers didn't just earn a point on Saturday—they earned respect.
