No. 7 ranked Axewomen use strong first half to tame Panthers
The Acadia Axewomen continued their undefeated season on Saturday in their final exhibition game with a 43-14 victory over the UPEI Panthers in front of 310 fans at Raymond Field.
WOLFVILLE, NS—The Acadia Axewomen continued their undefeated season on Saturday in their final exhibition game with a 43-14 victory over the UPEI Panthers in front of 310 fans at Raymond Field.
The No. 7 ranked Axewomen led from the get-go, with Juliette Matsukubo (Ottawa, ON) scoring the first of her two trys in the third minute.
To round out the scoring in the first half, Sara Grant (Melrose, NB) scored a pair of trys in the 17th and 23rd minutes respectively to put the Axewomen ahead 26-0 at the break.
Frances Claire Aceron (Estevan, SK) scored Acadia's first try of the second half, while Grant scored her third of the day just five minutes later in the 54th minute. Olivia Savoie (Garnett Settlement, NB) rounded out the Axewomen scoring with her 64th minute try.
Emily Duffy (Saint John, NB) scored back-to-back trys for UPEI in the final 12 minutes of the match, with Charlotte Branchflower (Halifax, NS) converting on both, but it was too late to complete the comeback for the Panthers.
On the day, Grant completed four converts, with her three trys to lead all scorers with 23 points.
Next weekend Acadia heads to STFX for their final match of the year, a battle for first place in the AUS, while UPEI will face the Saint Mary's Huskies.
