The UPEI Panthers wasted no time taking control.
The Panthers (11-7) led wire-to-wire Friday night at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, leaning on a disciplined defensive effort to earn a 76-50 win over the Cape Breton Capers. Cape Breton (2-16) finished with just 12 made field goals and shot 23.5 per cent overall, and while the Capers lived at the free-throw line (25-for-35), they never found any flow in the half court.
Devon Lawlor opened the scoring with a layup, and UPEI followed it with sustained defensive pressure that quickly shifted momentum. Ella Simmons knocked down an early three to make it 7-0, and Lawlor's first triple pushed the lead to 11-4. She wasn't done there, as she added another three late in the quarter as the Panthers stretched the margin to 20-8 after one.
The second quarter followed the same script: defend first, let the offence flow. Cape Breton was held to just 10 points in the frame, and UPEI steadily stretched the lead by turning stops into quick scores. Lawlor continued to supply the offence, reaching 16 points by halftime, while the Panthers' depth kept the tempo high, as UPEI went into the break up 38-18.
Cape Breton showed some life coming out of the break, leaning heavily on trips to the free-throw line as the quarter turned choppy. The Capers scored 16 in the frame, but UPEI stayed composed and continued to answer at the other end. The Panthers edged the quarter 18-16, denying any real momentum swing and extending the cushion to 56-4 heading into the fourth.
Any remaining doubt was put to rest in the final 10 minutes. UPEI controlled the fourth quarter 20-16, extending the lead through second-chance scoring and defensive pressure that repeatedly forced turnovers. The Panthers finished with a decisive 24-2 edge in points off turnovers, owned the paint 38-22, and got a strong lift from their bench, which contributed 26 points.
Lawlor paced the Panthers with 22 points, adding four rebounds and three assists. Grace Lancaster pushed through a tough shooting night and impacted the game in other ways, finishing with eight points, four assists and three steals. Regan Cornford added eight points and seven rebounds—five on the offensive glass—while Ingrid Khuong pulled down eight boards and handed out three assists. Ella Simmons and Lily Vrugteman chipped in eight points apiece, with Simmons knocking down both of her looks from beyond the arc.
The two teams will square off again Saturday afternoon.
