The UPEI Panthers put on a defensive masterclass Friday night, smothering the Saint Mary's Huskies in a 64-40 win at home to open a weekend series.
From start to finish, UPEI's relentless pressure dictated the tone of the game. The Panthers' defence forced the young Huskies (2-1) into poor shots and long scoring droughts. Saint Mary's managed just 40 points, with only one player, Emily Dikdan, breaking into double figures. She finished with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds, but her efforts weren't nearly enough to solve UPEI's defensive wall.
On the other end, the Panthers (1-2) showcased a balanced attack that highlighted their depth and unselfish play. Veteran guard Devon Lawlor led the way with 12 points, while Grace Lancaster and Lily Vrugteman each added 10. Vrugteman flirted with a double-double, contributing eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block in an all-around standout performance. Off the bench, Karla Benitez was electric with 11 points, and rookie forward Regan Cornford chipped in nine points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
The opening quarter saw both teams trading baskets early before UPEI started to pull away. Benitez provided an instant spark off the bench, scoring the final four points of the frame as the Panthers closed the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 16–10 lead.
UPEI tightened the screws defensively in the second, holding Saint Mary's to just nine points in the frame. Vrugteman's physical play in the paint set the tone—she scored four points and hauled in four boards during the frame—while Lancaster drilled a late three-pointer to extend the lead to 29-17. The Panthers carried a 29-19 advantage into halftime, confident and in control.
The Huskies showed some fight to start the third, with Dikdan scoring the first four points to cut the deficit to six. But that brief surge was quickly snuffed out. Lancaster responded with five straight points as part of a 7-0 UPEI run that pushed the lead back to double digits. Moments later, Lawlor took over with a personal five-point burst to make it 41-26. The Panthers held firm, carrying a 15-point cushion into the fourth quarter.
By the final frame, UPEI's depth took over. The bench unit poured in 14 of the team's 17 points in the quarter, with Benitez once again leading the charge. The Panthers' defensive energy never wavered, holding Saint Mary's to just eight fourth-quarter points to seal the convincing 64-40 win.
The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as UPEI looks to complete the weekend sweep.
