The UPEI Panthers are treating every game like a final, and on Friday night, that urgency paid off. With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Panthers earned a crucial 4-1 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies.
"We're coming in with this mentality where we're not giving up," said rookie midfielder Joash Bouchard. "Whether we're at the bottom or the top of the league, every game is like a final. It's the most important game of our lives, and we demonstrated that today."
Bouchard led the way with a breakout performance, scoring once and setting up two others, while striker Jahmal Boursiquot added a pair of goals. Rookie winger Antwaan Miller chipped in the opening marker as the Panthers secured three desperately needed points.
The Panthers wasted little time showing their intent. In the ninth minute, Vardy St-Fleur spotted Miller racing down the left flank. The freshman showcased dazzling footwork, slipping past two defenders before tucking a shot inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
However, the Huskies answered in the 18th minute when William Robichaud muscled his way along the sideline and cut toward the box before delivering a pinpoint cross to Will Brown who launched himself for a diving header that eluded keeper Javier Zaragoza to tie the game.
Knowing three points were essential, UPEI turned to their rookie spark plug in the 35th minute. Bouchard took a sharp touch in midfield, shrugged off a defender, and slid a perfect ball through to Boursiquot, who slotted home a calm finish to restore the lead.
"You have to keep going," Bouchard said afterward. "We've been through ups and downs this season, and this game means a lot—not just for me, but for the entire."
The second half was tightly contested, with both sides pushing for control. Zaragoza held firm in goal, while the back line, anchored by Max VanWiechen and Riad Jaha, repelled Saint Mary's attacks.
With the game still on the line late, UPEI struck again in the 86th minute. Bouchard intercepted a header and quickly fed Boursiquot, who danced into space before firing a crisp low strike into the corner for his second of the night and fifth of the season.
Bouchard then sealed it in stoppage time, pressing high and stealing a mishandled back pass from Mello before slotting into the open net for his first AUS goal and a night to remember.
The win keeps the Panthers' postseason hopes alive and gives them a much-needed boost heading into the final stretch beginning Sunday afternoon against the Acadia Axemen.
