The UPEI Panthers have bolstered their blue line with the addition of mobile, two-way defenceman Cole McKenna for the 2026-27 season.
McKenna, a 21-year-old from Tottenham, ON, joins the Panthers following two seasons with the Northeast Generals of the North American Hockey League where he recorded 11 goals and 37 assists for 48 points across 115 games with the Generals.
A mobile, two-way defenceman, McKenna prides himself on playing a dependable game at both ends of the ice. He is comfortable disrupting plays defensively, moving the puck efficiently, and joining the rush when opportunities arise.
McKenna also brings valuable leadership experience to the Panthers after serving as captain of the Generals last season. Earning the captaincy was one of the most meaningful accomplishments of his junior career.
"It meant a lot to earn the trust and respect of my teammates," he said. "I took pride in leading by example, being someone the guys could rely on and always being there to support them on and off the ice."
McKenna's strong ties to Prince Edward Island made UPEI a natural fit. His mother is a UPEI graduate, and with several family members and friends already on the Island, the opportunity felt like a homecoming.
"I decided to join UPEI because it felt like the perfect fit for me," McKenna said. "I've heard nothing but great things about the school, the hockey program, and the community, so it made the decision an easy one."
Panthers head coach Forbes MacPherson believes McKenna has the tools and character to make a successful transition to the U SPORTS level.
"We are very intrigued by Cole's transition to U SPORTS," MacPherson said. "The recruiting landscape has changed, and Cole expressed an interest in UPEI. He comes very highly recommended by his coaching staff and others around his league. We are excited about what Cole can bring to our group."
