The UPEI Panthers just landed a game-changer. One of Canada's top young runners, Denver LeBlanc, has committed to UPEI—instantly raising the ceiling for both the cross country and track and field programs.
The 17-year-old from Passekeag, New Brunswick, joins the Panthers from Hampton High School and the Saint John Track and Field Club, bringing a resumé that already includes national, Atlantic, and provincial titles.
LeBlanc's rise has been remarkable. Last summer, he captured his first national championship in the 800 metres at the CTFL x NB Trials, earning a coveted spot in the Canadian Track and Field League (CTFL) for 2026—an achievement that effectively turns him semi-professional. He's also a multiple-time provincial and Atlantic champion in the 400 m, 800 m, and 1500 m. At the U20 Canadian Track and Field Championships, he finished as runner-up at the qualifying stage.
At UPEI, LeBlanc will study kinesiology and compete year-round, representing the Panthers in both cross country and track and field. On the track, he'll focus primarily on the 600 m and 1000 m, while also contributing in the 300 m and 1500 m events.
"Though known for his outstanding 800 prowess, Denver will still have an impact on our cross country program," said head coach Mike Peterson. "His third-place finish in New Brunswick this fall came as no surprise, and we think he's just scratching the surface. We're thrilled to land a recruit of this calibre."
Track and field head coach Damon MacDonald echoed that excitement.
"Denver is an extremely versatile runner who will immediately challenge for medals in the 600 m and 1000 m, and he'll elevate our 4×400 m and 4×800 m relay teams to contender status."
LeBlanc says he's eager to help both programs continue their climb.
"Coach Peterson and Coach MacDonald are building something dangerous in the AUS and U SPORTS, and I'm excited to be part of that climb. With my early commitment, I hope to bring more New Brunswick talent to the program."
