WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen shut out the UPEI Panthers 2-0 during a rainy Saturday night game.
The first scoring chance of the game came when UPEI Panther Danielle Younker (Charlottetown, P.E.I) was tripped in the box and was awarded a penalty shot. Her kick to the centre of the net did not fake out Axewomen goaltender Spencer Skinner (Hammonds Plains, N.S.), who made the save.
Another scoring opportunity arose when the Axewomen received a free kick at 31:14. Lauren Jodrey (Bedford, N.S.) took an excellent shot and scored her first of the season to give Acadia the 1-0 lead.
The pace of the game stayed intense well into the second half of the game, but Acadia goaltender Skinner and Panthers' goaltender Amanda Stanyer (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) both had outstanding performances and kept the game close. Each was named their team's Subway Player of the Game.
It was not until 86' that the game saw its next goal - a corner by Axewomen Holly Buckler (Halifax, N.S.) found its way to Jayden Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.), who gave Acadia the insurance they needed for the last few minutes.
The final score of the matchup was 2-0 for the Acadia Axewomen. Acadia remains in first place in the AUS standings and undefeated at 11 games.
The Axewomen play their next and last soccer game of the regular season on Friday, October 26 when they challenge ever tough Cape Breton Capers for bragging rights as the conference's first place team.
The Panthers are back in action Sunday night when they visit Dalhousie.
