Charlottetown, PEI (September 15, 2016) -- Cross Country set for their first meet of the season, while Women's Rugby travels to Halifax to face the Huskies. Both soccer teams will be on the road Sunday in Fredericton, but not before they host Acadia in their home opener Friday night.
Cross Country -- Acadia Invitational September 17th
The UPEI Cross Country team is set to begin their second season with a new coach Colin McAdam. The first meet of the season is scheduled to begin this Saturday at Acadia University. New coach, Colin MacAdam is eager to get the season started, "We have young athletes with lots of enthusiasm. Our cross country runners have put in a solid summer of training and have shown up in good condition for the coming races." Returning runners of Jeremy Thompson and Brandon Higgenbotham, MacAdam adds, "both have looked very strong in training and should finish strong, heading into the season."
Coach MacAdam has a goal in mind heading into his first season as head coach, "Our goal will be to get runners in the top half of the competition."
The cross country team will travel to UdeM next Saturday for the second meet of the season.
WRugby -- Panthers @ Huskies September 18th, 2:00pm
The Women's Rugby Panthers look to build from their strong home opener against the St. Mary's Huskies this Sunday at 2:00pm. "The team had many successes within the game, as well as a few shortfalls as you would expect from a loss, however we are working hard to adjust our system of play to address those areas," said coach John LaBoyne following Tuesday's practice.
The Huskies fell to a strong St. FX team who defeated the Huskies 130-5. LaBoyne added, "the Panthers players drew confidence throughout the game on Saturday, and I expect that confidence to extend further into the season."
In the last 5 season against the Huskies, the UPEI Panthers are 6-4 outscoring St. Mary's 292-183.
Panther athlete of week Rebecca Chapman says, "We never count the Huskies out, they are consistently a hard hitting and rugged team to play against. I watched the game they played last week, and by no means was the score reflective of the game flow so we have to stay on our toes going into the game on Sunday."
UPEI and St. Mary's will square off again in on October 1st at 2:00pm at MacAdam Field. Go to austv.ca to watch the game live or for updates follow @SMUHuskies
